Clients, Not Customers
Written by Trevor Tulin on June 6th, 2020
Distinguishing between clients and customers is key to running your business effectively.
Most businesses service customers. They sell products or services to that customer that will hopefully help them in some way. But I'm going to share why you shouldn't be using the word "customer" and how that can be hurting your business.

It all comes down to how you perceive WHO you are helping with your business, and it makes a big difference on how you treat your clientele.

If you look up the word "customer" in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, you get this definition: "one that purchases a commodity or service". This is a very general definition that gives very little worth to the people your business is trying to help. It also gives the impression that your business is only dealing in "commodities", and nothing more important.

Now if you look up the word "client" in the same source, you get these definitions: "one that is under the protection of another" and "a person who engages the professional advice or services of another". This definition has much more meaning and gives greater importance to you and your clients.

This is a very simple mindset and perspective adjustment, but it will have a great impact on how you continue to do business. Start to view and treat your customers like clients and they will notice a difference.

It all comes down to a simple question: Do you want to be the person who sells commodities, or the business that cares for and nurtures your client to give them the best care and attention so that they keep coming back?

The answer is pretty clear.
